Memory Techniques


One very effective way to improve your memory is through repetition and reviewing information on a regular basis. It is a well-known fact that the more you repeat information, the more likely it is you will retain that information.

There are many ways to use this technique such as reviewing lecture notes daily or creating flashcards. You can say it out loud if it helps, write it down or use a combination of written and verbal repetition.


Memorization through imagery is associating words or facts with pictures or symbols. Creating a song or story to memorize a word, fact or series of facts can be an interesting, creative and effective memory technique.

Remember Someone’s Name

Some people are face people while others never forget a name. Personally, I’m a face person and the times I’ve forgotten people’s names it has been very embarrassing.  Forgetting someone’s name can be awkward and leave an impression that that person is not important to you. Yikes!

To remedy this, when meeting someone for the first time, gaze into their eyes a bit longer and make a mental note of their name. Say their name several times in your head and make a conscious effort to remember their name. You can even do a word association with the person’s name. It becomes habit-forming and it works!!!

Most people are a bit guarded or distracted when meeting others for the first time. By taking a moment to practice these few simple techniques, you will be surprised at how much easier it is to recall someone’s name.
